Are dental implants worth it?

If you still haven’t read much about dental implants, it’s common to be curious about the procedure and whether it’s worthy or not. It’s not only about the cost; it’s also about the time that this treatment requires and the fear that it might not be as successful as it’s supposed to be. However, once you visit our implant dentist in Daniel Island or Summerville/Nexton, you’ll feel more confident about this decision. Our team will explain the procedure in detail, and together you will decide if this option meets your needs.

Dental implants preserve jaw bone.

Video 00:25 | Mandibular Jaw, bone recession after losing teeth. Medically accurate dental 3D animation shows an edentulous (lacking teeth) person after several years and the resulting changes to facial appearance with jaw bone loss.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental Implants look and function natural teeth.

One of the most significant advantages of dental implants is that they restore full chewing power. Most patients won’t tell the difference between their natural teeth and the implants – they’ll simply enjoy their meals like they used to!

Dental Implants can last a lifetime.

When properly cared for, dental implants can last forever. Unlike other teeth replacement alternatives (dental bridges or dentures), implants are fully integrated into the bone tissue, becoming part of the jawbone as if they were natural roots.

Dental Implants prevent bone loss.

Bone loss (or bone resorption) is a common consequence of tooth loss. After an extraction, the bone tissue anchoring the missing tooth starts deteriorating due to lack of stimulation. The human body is efficient and will never keep a tissue with no function. If that tooth isn’t replaced soon, that bone area can lose up to 25% of its volume only during the first year.

Dental implants are the only restoration that stimulates the constant deposit of new bone tissue and prevent bone resorption. Other teeth replacement options can even accelerate bone loss!

Dental Implants keep adjacent teeth stable.

Adjacent teeth can quickly shift towards the gap caused by a missing tooth. This migration has both aesthetic consequences (crooked teeth) and functional implications, as it can alter the patient’s bite. The longer the patient waits to replace missing teeth, the more severe these consequences are.

Dental Implants keep your gums healthy.

A missing tooth gap can act as a trap for food and bacteria, which can lead to gum disease if the patient doesn’t have perfect oral hygiene. Dental implants fill this gap, and unlike bridges or dentures, they enable patients to keep the area clean and plaque-free.

Dental Implants can prevent facial sagging and premature aging.

Patients that have lost teeth a long time ago might face one of bone resorption’s worst consequences: facial sagging. When this happens, the lower third of the face starts to collapse, and the distance between the tip of the nose and the chin decreases. These changes are typically combined with wrinkles around the mouth, thinning lips and a more pointed chin, making patients seem a lot older than they are.

Advantages of Dental Implants

Dental implants are the gold standard in tooth replacement treatments. River Landing Dentistry patients who opt for implants will enjoy a superior outcome and countless benefits compared to other conventional treatments. Our implant dentists in Daniel Island and Summerville/Nexton can show you how, in comparison to other tooth replacement alternatives, implants are:

Less invasive on your smile.

More comfortable.

Easier to speak and eat with.

Long-lasting.

More aesthetic.

Able to support your soft tissues.

A wiser investment.

Hybrid All-on-4 or 6 (Full Mouth Implants)

A minimally invasive solution with a fixed full-arch restoration for high patient satisfaction.

In 1998, Dr Paulo Malo successfully treated the first patient with the Hybrid All-on-X (Four or Six) treatment concept. Since then, hundreds of thousands of patients have been treated with this concept.

The Hybrid All-on-X (Four or Six) treatment concept is a cost-efficient solution that provides patients with a fixed full-arch prosthesis on the day of surgery.

Video 01:41 | Demonstration of the life changing All-on-4 dental implant treatment concept.

Full-mouth implant restorations usually require the placement of four, six or more dental implants. It is an excellent choice for those who want an immediate enhancement of their smiles. Patients who lost multiple teeth a long time ago know how complicated and lengthy teeth replacement treatments can be. The All-on-4 implant procedure offers them a quick answer for their problem that makes them save time and money and alleviates the emotional stress of not having healthy teeth.

Fixed full-arch restoration

The All-on-4 dental implant procedure is indicated in patients with no teeth in a dental arch, those who still have some teeth but not in the best conditions, and patients who already have dentures or restorations but want to be more confident in their everyday lives.

The procedure consists of the placement of four implants and a posterior prosthetic rehabilitation with fixed restorations.

All-on-4 dental implants offer the following benefits:

Get fully-functioning, new teeth in a short time

Improve your appearance and self-confidence

Eat foods without reservation

Get a long-lasting smile

Eliminate health issues associated with decay and periodontal disease

Easily care for your teeth

With as few as four dental implants, you can replace your old, ill-fitting dentures and have a permanent, fixed implant-supported hybrid prosthesis in only one day!

Get immediate results

Experience a radical improvement in chewing ability and overall comfort in no time!

Improve your appearance

An All-on-4 dental implant treatment can make you look younger – a lot younger. It can take years off your appearance in only one day and prevent further aging signs at the same time.

This procedure helps preserve the shape and strength of the jawbone and avoid the long-term effects of multiple missing teeth. When soft tissues have the proper support, wrinkles and face lines soften, and the lower third of the face remains in harmony.

Eat what you want, when you want, where you want

Your meals won’t be the same after the Hybrid All-on-4 procedure. No more worrying about biting or chewing in public – just enjoy your favorite foods with no reservations!

Get a long-lasting smile.

The Hybrid All-on-4 dental implant procedure is a permanent solution for your dental problems. This new set of teeth is only removed by our dentists for cleanings or check-ups, and if you are diligent in assisting these appointments and have good oral hygiene, it will last a lifetime!

Enhance your overall quality of life

With Hybrid All-on-4 dental implants, you experience what it’s like to have natural teeth once again. You’ll have greater comfort and confidence when smiling, speaking, and eating – no one will even notice your teeth aren’t natural!

Eliminate health issues associated with missing teeth

The Hybrid All-on-4 dental implant procedure helps you recover oral health. Before this treatment, our dentists will remove any sign of infection, which will reduce the risk of periodontal disease after the procedure. Periodontal disease has many systemic consequences and has been linked to many diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and heart conditions, so it’s crucial to avoid its development. In addition, after All-on-4 procedures, patients have a perfect bite, which prevents disorders in the temporomandibular joints and chronic pain.

How to care for All-on-4 dentures

Another All-on-4 implants benefit is that it’s easy to maintain. You only need to brush and floss daily and schedule regular check-up visits to your River Landing hygienist and dentist. In this way, your new teeth will stay clean and healthy for years to come, and your brand new smile will last the longest!

Snap-In Dentures (Locator Overdentures)Replace all of your missing teeth with a Snap-In Denture for a lower cost than fixed full-mouth implant restorations.

What are “snap-in” dentures?

“Snap-in dentures are full dentures that are supported by, and attached to, dental implants. Instead of snugly sitting on the gums like the traditional ones, these dentures are firmly retained by dental implants. Although both dentists and patients can remove these dentures for cleaning and care, they don’t move or slip around while they are in place. This makes them more comfortable and easy to wear than regular dentures.

Peace of mind offered by Implant-supported dentures

Most patients that have worn traditional dentures can tell that they can be uncomfortable after a few months of use. That’s why more and more patients are becoming interested in this type of denture. Snap-in dentures are a versatile, long-term solution that makes patients smile with confidence and restores their ability to eat and speak naturally.

model-of-snap-in-denture-with-2-dental-implants

Photo above shows a model of false teeth (denture) and 2 dental implants to retain and support the “snap-in” denture.

How to care for snap-in dentures

Taking good care of your denture is another crucial aspect that will help it last as long as intended.

To clean your snap-in denture, follow these steps:

Before going to bed, remove your dentures and brush them with a denture brush, unscented antibacterial soap, and water. Gently scrub the o-rings as well: any food particles or debris that isn’t correctly removed from this area will prevent you from snapping your denture back into place. Once your appliance is perfectly clean, you can place it in a denture box filled with water and let it sit there overnight.

For deeper cleaning, you can place a denture-cleaning tablet in the box once or twice a week. This kills any bacteria that might have been left behind after manually cleaning the appliance. However, it is crucial to avoid doing this too often: some of the ingredients present in these tablets may compromise the longevity of the o-rings.

But as important as cleaning your denture is to keep your gums healthy. So once your denture is placed in the box, it’s time to clean your gums. Using a soft toothbrush and toothpaste, brush your gums and tongue – it’s essential to keep dental plaque to the minimum to avoid periodontal disease. Be extra careful when you are brushing around the implants. Our dentists strongly recommend using water floss to clean around the abutments. This device shoots a high-powered stream of water around the implants ensuring they are perfectly cleaned.

Dental implants and facial appearance

How do traditional dentures impact facial appearance?

Most patients know the disadvantages of not replacing missing teeth on time. However, few of them are aware of how important it is to choose the right teeth replacement option. Many people decide to get traditional full dentures for their cost and convenience, but fail to see the whole picture.

Dentures can have a huge impact on your appearance. As long as they fit properly, patients wouldn’t notice any significant change. However, after a few months of use, these dentures start having problems. This comes as no surprise: dentures don’t prevent bone resorption, so once the jawbone is remodeled, the denture’s base doesn’t fit as it used to.

Poorly fitted dentures can dramatically change your appearance for the worse. Not to mention that, besides the changes related to the denture in itself, patients also face the alteration in facial aesthetics that bone resorption causes.

Are you wondering, “How will I look with dentures?.” If your dentures are not supported by dental implants, you can expect the following changes in your appearance:

Sagging Face
Sagging face is one of the most common complaints among long-term denture wearers. Depending on each particular facial structure, this condition can be evidenced by hanging jowls, turkey neck, or deep facial folds and wrinkles. This happens because most dentures don’t fully replace the volume of the jawbone lost due to bone resorption. That means that, although you have the same amount of soft tissue as before, as you don’t have the proper support for that tissue, it just “hangs down” your face.

Sunken Lips
Another typical problem is the sunken appearance of the lower third of the face. It is also a consequence of bone resorption: in this case, instead of having skin hanging down off your face, lips just roll inward, creating a hollow appearance around your mouth. In the long run, you might not even be able to close your lips properly and may experience leakage at the corners, which can provoke irritation and even infections.

Witch’s Chin
This goes hand in hand with the sunken lips. As your jawbone lose volume in the area of the lips, your chin points out, and the distance between the chin and the tip of the nose decreases. This alteration in the lower third is often described as “witch’s chin” and negatively impacts facial aesthetics.

Puffy Lips and Cheeks
When too much bone tissue has been lost, dentures are thicker and more voluminous. If the denture isn’t manufactured correctly, or for some reason, isn’t fitting properly, it can actually push your soft tissues outwards, resulting in puffy lips and cheeks. Implant dentures avoid this because they don’t have a flange that goes around the gums.

Crooked Jaw
Poorly fitted dentures alter your normal bite and make your jaw tilt to one side or the other. This may not be obvious at first, but as your denture wears down, the tilt increases and becomes evident for you and the people around you. Moreover, besides the aesthetic problem, a crooked jaw can also interfere in the normal functioning of the temporomandibular joints, resulting in pain and functional inconveniences.

Counteracting the harmful effects of facial aging in denture wearers

Ill-fitting dentures dramatically impact facial appearance, especially in the lower facial third. Many changes can be noticed after wearing deficient dentures for a long time:

The distance between the nose and the chin decreases, and the chin points out (“witchy look”).

The lips start showing signs of ageing (wrinkles and expression lines) and have a sunken appearance.

The skin around the face and neck sags, and in some cases, lips and cheeks look puffy.

All these changes make patients look older than they are, and they get more and more noticeable as time goes by. The good news is that, in most cases, all these ageing signs can be reversed by wearing custom-made, skilfully designed implant-retained dentures.

Restore your Smile with Implant Retained OverdenturesWhat Are Implant Retained Overdentures, and Why Are They So Popular?

Implant retained overdentures are an excellent solution for those patients missing all teeth in a dental arch. These dentures combine the function and comfort of dental implants with the convenience of a traditional denture: the cost of a full-mouth restoration with individual implants can be almost prohibitive. That’s why it comes as no surprise that so many patients ask about implant retained overdentures. They are an innovative solution for replacing a full set of missing teeth that is surprisingly affordable.

So what are implant retained overdentures, and why are they quickly becoming one of the most sought-after tooth replacement options for River Landing Dentistry patients? Here’s what you need to know.

Implant Retained Overdentures: Full Dentures That Snap Onto Implants

As the name implies, implant retained overdentures are full dentures that snap onto dental implants. They look similar to traditional dentures: these dentures use a set of highly-aesthetic prosthetics to replace entire rows of teeth. However, the main difference is that these dentures are retained by dental implants, which are connected to the base of the denture through small components known as “abutments”. Patients can easily remove the denture and put it back in. Once it has “snapped”, it stays firmly in place – overdentures don’t move around while you eat or talk!

Cleaning and Repairs: Implant Retained Dentures

All teeth replacement options need constant maintenance. Whether you choose traditional dentures, dental implants, or implant-retained dentures, you need to keep your smile healthy and visit the office regularly for exams and check-ups. However, it is a fact that some tooth replacement options are more time-consuming than others. So those who lead a hectic lifestyle and are always on the go should consider the following aspects.

While traditional dentures need to be removed and thoroughly cleaned every night, dental implants can be cleaned as if they were natural teeth. You won’t need to worry about denture creams, denture adhesives, or denture-cleaning liquids.

And while individual dental implants are as comfortable as overdentures in everyday life, they are costly and time-consuming. A full-mouth implant rehabilitation requires much more chair time than overdentures, and the repairs and replacement of crowns are bridges are also more expensive and time-consuming.

Hybrid implant dentures are the best of both worlds. They provide the same comfort as dental implants and are as convenient as full dentures. With good oral hygiene, hybrid implant dentures can last up to 20 years, and the good news is that even if you need to get a new denture, your implants won’t need to be replaced. Here at River Landing, we offer treatments that can last a lifetime!

Main advantages of choosing implant-supported dentures

Excellent Stability

Unlike traditional dentures, hybrid dentures are anchored directly to the jawbone, just like natural teeth. This means that instead of sitting snugly on the gum tissue, these dentures are firmly attached to the implants, which provide excellent retention. You will be able to eat your favourite foods again without worrying about your denture moving around your mouth. Hard candies, rare steak, crunchy crisps, corn on the cob… anything can be enjoyed with implant-retained dentures!

In addition, this stability also makes it possible to enunciate with complete clarity. Traditional dentures can often shift out of place, making it difficult to speak clearly. Implant dentures stay firmly in place, allowing you to have a conversation with friends, give a speech, or just talk on the phone without having to struggle with a loose denture.

Prevention of Bone Atrophy

The most important health benefit of hybrid dentures is that they prevent bone resorption. How does this work? Well, implants are made of medical-grade titanium, a material that in contact with bone tissue triggers a physiological process known as “osseointegration.” This process stimulates the deposit of new bone tissue around the implants, and once this tissue is hardened (a few months after the surgery), these implants are fused into the jawbone. This new bone tissue maintains the shape and structure of the jawbone, so your denture will never need a relining or adjustment, saving you both time and money over the years.

While other options might be more affordable and less complex, hybrid dentures provide far greater long-term benefits that could save you significant discomfort, frustration, and time.

Improving Your Quality of Life

Multiple teeth loss has a dramatic impact on social life. Our team at River Landing Dentistry understands the problems these patients face every day: lack of self-esteem, difficulties in eating and speaking, facial alterations… That’s why we do our best to deliver the treatment they deserve. Patients that choose hybrid dentures almost always come back to thank us for the dramatic change these dentures made in their lives. Our goal is to help each patient achieve a healthy, comfortable, attractive smile that boosts self-confidence and helps them enjoy life.

Eat what you love! Enjoy your favorite foods!

With dental implants, you will be able to enjoy again those foods you’ve been pushing aside for years. As they are fused into the jawbone, you won’t need to worry about your teeth moving around or falling out – you will bite and chew as comfortably as when you had your natural teeth.

Can you imagine eating pizza, hamburgers and sandwiches again with your hands? The only way to truly enjoy eating these foods is to hold them with your hands, bite them with your front teeth, grasp them, and tear them away. Do you miss that feeling?

You can’t do that with dentures – they’re not secure enough. Dentures wearers need to cut these foods into pieces and eat them with a fork, which is impossible in many situations. But if you decide to replace your missing teeth with dental implants, you’d be able to enjoy those meals again.

Another advantage of dental implants is that you get to savour the authentic taste of the food. Traditional dentures mainly rely on suction to stay in place. And to create enough suction for the upper denture, there’s a plate that covers the majority of the roof of the mouth. This part of the mouth has many taste buds, similar to the tongue, so when eating with dentures, you might find it more difficult to enjoy the taste of your meals.

But dental implants don’t rely on suction. They are screwed into the jawbone and act as an authentic root. You won’t need to worry about eating or drinking with your implants, and you will enjoy the flavour of your favorite foods!

Bone Grafting / Augmentation

Some patients don’t have enough bone tissue to receive dental implants straight away. The good news is that there’s a modern technique that enables these patients to get their implants placed soon: bone grafting.

Bone grafting, also known as bone augmentation, is a procedure needed when patients don’t have the appropriate quality or quantity of bone tissue. Through this technique, dentists place a small amount of grafting material (synthetic bone tissue or actual bone tissue from the same patient or animal origin) where the implants need to be placed. After some weeks, this material is replaced by natural bone tissue, which will be ready to receive the implants in a few months.

This procedure is crucial in many implant treatments. If a dental implant is placed where the bone structure is insufficient, the likelihood of treatment failure dramatically increases.

Reasons For Bone Augmentation

The number one reason for bone augmentation procedure is bone resorption. The bone in your jaw maintains its strength and structure due to the constant stimulation and pressure of chewing. When a missing tooth or multiple missing teeth are left unreplaced, the bone tissue stops receiving this stimulation and triggers a resorptive process. Only a year after losing a tooth, 25% of the bone that used to anchor it has already been lost. Dentists recommend replacing the lost natural tooth with a dental implant as soon as possible to avoid bone loss.

There are other more uncommon causes of bone loss, including misaligned teeth, gum disease, infection, and tumors.

Sinus Lift

Over the last few decades, dental implants have become more accessible, making them an increasingly standard dental procedure. As more people choose dental implants to replace missing teeth, sinus lifts have become much more common.

The sinuses are two air-filled cavities that are located inside the upper jawbones. We already know that, in most cases, tooth loss often leads to bone resorption. Once the tooth is gone, there’s no point in maintaining the bone tissue that no longer has a function. So if the upper back teeth have been missing for a while, very little bone tissue will be left between the oral cavity and the sinuses. So in many cases, implants cannot be placed without the sinuses being “lifted”. This surgical procedure is known as a sinus lift. It consists of adding grafting material to the sinus floor to get the amount of bone tissue needed to receive implants where the upper molars and premolars used to be.

Biological Growth Proteins (Accelerated Healing)Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) / Platelet-Rich Fibrin Therapies (PRF)

A local anesthetic will be administered, and a tiny incision will be made to expose the prosthetic root. The temporary stop-cap will be removed and a small post or abutment will be attached to the implant.

When the healing process is complete, the new dental prosthesis (usually a crown) will be created from bite impressions. A tiny screw will be used to secure the prosthesis onto the abutment. Any necessary adjustments will be made to ensure the prosthesis is comfortable, and the T3 dental implant will be secure for a lifetime.

Understanding PRP/PRF

We all rely on the natural healing of our body, which is mostly accelerated by the blood. The human blood contains various components that have healing properties. River Landing Dentistry uses a pain-free procedure to get blood from various parts of your body like the arm so that it can be used as your natural healing treatment.

The PRP/PRF Process

Once we extract your blood, we put it in a centrifuge so that it can be separated. We then concentrate the white blood cells or fibrin obtained from the blood plasma. These components help your tissues quickly regenerate. We apply the PRP or PRF on the affected area (where you had a dental procedure done). Your stem cells strengthen and develop new tissue for speedy healing.

PRP/PRF Benefits

Jumpstarts a quick recovery process

Facilitates tissue regeneration and improves bone regeneration

Reduces swelling as well as inflammation, pain after a dental procedure, and bleeding

Strengthens as well as heals the jawbone after implants

Prevents dry sockets

Protects against bacterial, fungal, or other forms of infections

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants can last a lifetime with regular brushing and flossing and frequent visits to the dental office for exams and check-ups. Unfortunately, the restorations housed in those implants don’t last that long. Crowns, bridges and dentures last about 10 to 20 years before needing replacement due to wear and tear.

Maintaining excellent oral hygiene and taking some precautions is vital to extend the restorations’ lifespan as much as possible. Mouth location is also a factor in predicting the life of a dental restoration. Crowns and bridges in back teeth are used more actively while chewing, which means they will probably wear out more quickly than the ones near the front of the mouth.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts that are screwed into the jawbone. Through a minor surgery, dentists place the implants in the right angle and position and wait for them to heal for about 4 to 6 months. During this healing time, the titanium triggers a physiological process known as osseointegration, and once it’s finished, the implants are fused into the bone.

How do I know if I’m a candidate for dental implants?

The best way to know if dental implants are right for you is to visit our office. However, good candidates will typically:

Have a strong enough jawbone to accommodate implants.

Have healthy gums.

Be committed to routine oral healthcare and check-ups.

Don’t smoke or use tobacco products.

Don’t drink alcohol heavily.

Be willing to address some oral health conditions like gum disease before starting the dental implant process.
